Your Community

Recent engagement has highlighted the community members are unaware of how to be more involved in their local community in relation to having their say.

  • We want to hear what would be the best way to promote opportunities to you?
  • What would encourage you to be more involved
  • What barriers exist in relation to having your say!

I used to like to sit on the benches along the front in Gourock (and in Battery Park) but flower wreaths have been tie wrapped on to them and left to rot. The decay left behind makes the benches unusable and nobody seems to be clearing them away.

The best way for us to hear about activities is through promotion at other activities we are attending.

Warm spaces are good to arrange social gatherings. We can keep an eye on elderly folk and notice when someone isn't attending.

We use social media to find out what's on or the Greenock Telegraph/Inverclyde Now
The main barrier for working folk is timing.

We need to find ways to encourage folk to share skills that are going to be lost - eg crafting, baking, etc
Facebook can be toxic so I try to avoid it, so I miss out on learning what is on.
Posters that cover a few weeks at a time in local shops/libraries would be a good way to promote activities to me.
Two of the group are young female migrants and they love the area, but struggled to find out what was on when they first moved to Gourock. You can find details if you know where to look, but it's not easy when you're new. Council website didn't help.
The main barrier for this group is the time of day for activities. If you work, then there is less available outside of working hours. They volunteer at St John's, but do that during their lunch hour.
          Local noticeboards would be good.
Bike hire would be great - there are lots of lovely routes but I don't want the hassle of having my own bike. I'd like to get up and go and hire one for the day.

We find out what's on through neighbours and word of mouth. Not everyone uses Facebook or emails. Signs outside facilities has helped us identify activities of interest.
Health issues are a barrier to attending some activities.

Activities should be promoted on public transport.
Promotion of other activities should be done while attending something else in the community.

Social media has improved how things are advertised.

Barriers - loss of bus service is awful. If we didn't have access to a car, we would be less able to participate in local activities.

Word of mouth is how we find out what is available. We do also use social media and have a WhatsApp group
