Greenock West and Gourock: Community ConversationAffordable out of School Childcare
Access to affordable childcare has been highlighted as barrier for families across Inverclyde, we are looking to discuss the following:
- What does affordable out of school childcare mean to you?
- What childcare do you currently use, if any?
- What is important to you if you do access childcare?
Would you be interested in
- a career in Out of School Childcare/Childminding/Breakfast Clubs or Parent Stay and Play?
If yes tell us what would prevent this from happening?

The cost outweighs the benefit of working
It's awful. What's the point in going out to work when you need to pay all you earn for childcare. It doesn't encourage young women into work and needs to be addressed.
There's a real lack of availability. I don't know what young families without local relatives do.

- I have grandchildren in after school childcare and i believe this is important going forward for all families, i think the cost for childcare is too much and something needs done about it.
Other participants felt this did not apply to them.
Whilst attending the Lyle Gateway on the 11/02/2025, attendees raised the following comments:
- It was mention that after school childcare is too expensive and there is a lack of provisions in Inverclyde for young people with additional support needs.
Having before and after school care will benefit the children as will help with child development and socialising skills (Coppermine Warm Spaces 11/02/25) PF
Sounds like a great pilot scheme and it would great to have it rolled out in other areas (Coppermine Warm Spaces 11/02/25) PF

I think Affordable childcare is invaluable to our family / community. This service allows us to work and it gives us a sense of security while we are away working.
People need care, all ages not just children. There is childcare such as toddlers, childrens nurseries perhaps more information is needed about availability. This is an area of poverty. We should consider everybody and be inclusive.
I don't require any childcare but i do think more affordable childcare is needed for families and available in all the different communities
