Greenock East and Central Community ConversationAffordable out of School Childcare
Access to affordable childcare has been highlighted as barrier for families across Inverclyde, we are looking to discuss the following:
- What does affordable out of school childcare mean to you?
- What childcare do you currently use, if any?
- What is important to you if you do access childcare?
Would you be interested in
- a career in Out of School Childcare/Childminding/Breakfast Clubs or Parent Stay and Play?
If yes tell us what would prevent this from happening?

- As I am retried it does not affect me directly, I can only comment on the impact it has on my Grandchildren. My daughter works part time and for her to pay over the top for childcare it defeats the purpose of them working part time to better themselves. I think affordable childcare should be available to all.
- Affordable childcare is needed and very important to me as it supports parents to gain employment. There should be a parents stay and play as this helps isolated adults meet new people.
- I am no longer involved in childcare, but I believe childcare is essential, however I am now retired and not looking for a new career.
West College Scotland (Waterfront Campus) Freshers Week feedback 30/01/2025
Whilst at the above event an attendee fed back that their child has ASN and attends All Saints Primary School. They said that there is currently no child provision provided for children who have additional support needs.
Feedback from participant at Recovery Cafe in Auchmountain Hall:
There's a shortage of after school care and what's available is too expensive.
I'm not interested in a career, but would consider volunteering as would other parents perhaps.
Parklea Branching Out feedback 23.01.2025
My children are all grown up now but i did rely heavily on breakfast, afterschool and other clubs which helped me to work full time. It's a much needed service for working families.

There should be more access to childcare as my mum takes on this duty and can be challenging.
There should be more access to childcare for ASN children as this is a big priority for my family. There should be options or at least more help with transportation.
At Auchmountain Community Resource Centre 3/12/2024
- I feel like childcare should be subsidised more in our communities as families struggle with high costs of childcare.
At Belville Gardens Community Hub on the 06/12/2024 an attendee gave the following feedback:
- This is an area which has poverty so opportunities may well benefit children, families and communities.
-Employment opportunities are needed within this area in order to address poverty.
- Obviously childcare may be required in order to access employment. Though there are some families who have support in regards to childcare from within their own social network; family, friends and neighbours.
- Health & safety high priority. Sometimes employment available can include unsocial hours, long shifts, flexible working hours. If childcare is an option, should communities consider providing opportunities for unpaid carers to access employment by opportunity of staff/placements for their loved one.
At Belville Gardens Community Hub the 06/12/2024 an attendee gave the following feedback:
- Invest in Schools/Education activities to get young kids and tees invested in hobbies.
- Too much focus on provisions just being 'a place to go' instead of seeing what young people are interested in doing.
- More activity centres that teach life skills so they have a chance in the workforce.
This doesn't affect me at the moment BT
